IN BRIEF
Student Enrollment Duration is a Pro Insights metric that measures how long students remain actively enrolled before permanently exiting your program. This calculation helps identify enrollment trends and better understand long-term student engagement across your classes.
Overview
Student Enrollment Duration measures the total amount of time a student is actively enrolled in classes before they permanently leave your program. This metric is designed to give insight into the average length of a student’s journey, which can be used to evaluate retention and overall program engagement.
Only students who have fully exited the program are included in this calculation, ensuring the data reflects completed enrollment lifecycles rather than ongoing participation.
Deleting source data will affect the accuracy of results.
How Student Enrollment Duration is calculated
Pro Insights calculates Student Enrollment Duration using the following rules:
- Only exited students are counted: We calculate engagement only for students who have permanently left (i.e., have not returned for 90+ days).
- Enrolled time only: We add up the total time the student was actively enrolled. Any gaps between enrollments (e.g., if a student left and rejoined later) are not included.
- Measured in months: Engagement is calculated in months for consistency across different student timelines.
Formula
Using these numbers, Pro Insights uses the following formula to calculate Student Enrollment Duration:
Total Time for enrollments in ALL classes (in months) = Student Enrollment Duration
NOTE: Short gaps between enrollments (i.e., less than 90 days) are not counted
Example
If a student:
- Was enrolled for 6 months
- Took a 2-month break
- Re-enrolled for 4 more months
- Exited and has not re-enrolled for more than 90 days
Then:
Student Enrollment Duration = 10 months (i.e., 6 + 4 = 10)
NOTE: The 2-month gap is not counted as it is less than 90 days.
This metric helps you evaluate how long students typically stay engaged in your program, which can inform retention strategies and program improvements.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
-
Why do some students not appear in Student Enrollment Duration metrics?
- Only students who have permanently exited the program are included. If a student has re-enrolled within 90 days, they are not counted as exited.
-
Are gaps between enrollments ever included in the calculation?
- No. Only the time a student is actively enrolled is counted. Gaps between enrollments are always excluded.
-
Why is Student Enrollment Duration measured in months instead of days?
- Pro Insights uses months to provide consistent comparisons across students with varying enrollment timelines.
-
Can deleting historical enrollment data affect this metric?
- Yes. Deleting source data can reduce accuracy and change reported Student Enrollment Duration values.
